Stuck in time travel? 3 Steps to get you unstuck

Do you know why Hollywood takes care of time-traveling for you? Because when you, a mere mortal, take on time-traveling, you fill your head with worry and stress. You stop being present and start mulling over the what-ifs, what-nots and could-have-beens.

It’s all too much; you step into overwhelm. There are too many options, your brain cannot focus on all of them with clarity and it gets super messy, like an unattended skein of wool in the hands of a toddler.

When my clients feel overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious, it's a clear sign they're mentally journeying through time.

SIGNS THAT YOU’RE WORRYING ABOUT THE FUTURE:

  • You’re fretting over potential outcomes

  • You’re worrying about impending arguments you’re one hundred percent certain will take place

  • You’re speculating about other people’s future reactions

  • You’re ruminating, pondering, weighing options -real and imaginary- about all of the above

But wait! BEING STUCK IN THE PAST IS NO PEACH EITHER:

  • You’re regretting something that happened or that you did or said

  • You’re wishing things were different even though there’re nothing you can do to change the past

  • You feel powerless and full of guilt, shame and regret

  • You are not enjoying the blank slate of the present and the ability to rewrite your story

However, the moment you stop time traveling you can begin to:

  • Assess your current situation more clearly

  • Recognize the opportunity in front of you

  • Realign with your goals or aspirations

  • Plan actionable steps forward

  • Start making real progress

The key to avoiding the pitfalls of mental time-travel is staying in the present. It's not always easy, but it gets easier with practice. The next time you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious, try this:

  1. Remind yourself that you are not Doctor Strange, you don’t work for Stark Industries and you don’t own a TARDIS.

  2. Take a few deep breaths to bring yourself back to NOW.

  3. Feel the transformation from stress to clarity, allowing you to make wiser choices.

  4. Repeat as necessary.

These steps will work for everything from small concerns to major life decisions.

Future you will thank you.
